In 1976 the Indianapolis Star newspaper and the William H. Block department store joined to promote the first of six quilt competitions, the earliest broad-based quilt competition in the country during the Bicentennial. Stressing innovation based on traditional designs, the Star invited participants to expand their skills from traditional replication to creative artistry. This PowerPoint presentation offers a look at that development, and invites attendees to share any quilts that were made for those Indianapolis Star contests.
